Haymarket Terrace - work starts on 3 April

Work on the City Centre West to East link (CCWEL) to improve walking, wheeling and cycling, as well as public spaces is now moving to Haymarket.

Work will start in the Haymarket area on 3 April 2023. This includes construction of the new public realm areas, resurfacing of existing pavements and construction of the segregated cycleway. We will be working in the area up to January 2024.

Haymarket Terrace eastbound closure

To carry out this work safely and as quickly as we can, we need to close Haymarket Terrace to eastbound traffic. The closure will be from east of Magdala Crescent to the east of Rosebery Crescent. This will be in place from 3 April 2023 until November 2023. Westbound traffic can turn right into Coates Gardens.

SGN gas main renewal

While we are working on Haymarket Terrace, SGN will renew and divert their gas main between Coates Gardens and Rosebery Crescent to allow our CCWEL project to progress. This will take 12 weeks to complete from 3 April and has been co-ordinated with us to help reduce disruption as much as possible. SGN will issue a separate letter to customers and businesses directly affected by the gas main diversion works including information on any disruption to supplies.

Traffic diversion route

A diversion route for eastbound traffic will be via Magdala Crescent, Eglinton Crescent, Palmerston Place, Lansdowne Crescent, and Grosvenor Street.

We will reposition bus stops and taxi ranks, which has been agreed with Lothian Buses and taxi organisations.

  • Westbound bus stops will remain in place at Haymarket Station area.
  • Eastbound bus stops will be relocated to Magdala Crescent (northbound) and Grosvenor Street (southbound)
  • Taxi rank relocates to Dalry Road and Morrison Street

Haymarket Terrace - traffic management arrangements

Parking and loading

Loading bays will be retained on Haymarket Terrace, where possible, and bays will be placed on Coates Gardens and Rosebery Crescent.

Working with you to reduce disruption

Unfortunately, some disruption and noise is inevitable, but we will work with you to reduce the impact as much as possible.

Access to businesses and properties

Before work starts, representatives from Balfour Beatty and SGN will visit businesses along Haymarket Terrace to talk to you about how they will make sure you have access to your business throughout the construction work.

Disabled access during works can be challenging, but if you would like to discuss specific requirements with Balfour Beatty they will be happy to assist. If you have anything you'd like to raise about access to your business, please email ccwel@edinburgh.gov.uk
