New junctions

Guidance on new junction layouts with continuous footways

Wester Coates Terrace junction

We have installed new junctions at Roseburn and West Coates and other locations along the CCWEL route and  explain how to use them safely.

We have designed these to give priority to anyone walking, wheeling or cycling, in line with recent changes to the Highway Code. Read about changes to the Highway Code.

These are quite new to Edinburgh but have been successfully used elsewhere in the UK and Europe. While we all adjust to this new way of using our roads, please take extra caution and watch out for others moving in either direction.

ROSEBURN GARDENS AND ROSEBURN TERRACE

DRIVERS

  • There is no exit from Roseburn Gardens to Roseburn Terrace
  • You can access Roseburn Gardens turning left from the westbound lane on Roseburn Terrace.
  • You must give way to people walking or wheeling when turning left into Roseburn Gardens
  • You are not permitted to turn right from Roseburn Terrace into Roseburn Gardens.

PEDESTRIANS

  • You have priority over vehicles turning into Roseburn Gardens from Roseburn Terrace.
  • A permanent, one-hop crossing is in place, crossing Roseburn Terrace at this junction.

CYCLISTS

  • You can move in and out of Roseburn Gardens from both directions.
  • Cyclists can use the crossing signal button on the cycle path in Roseburn Gardens, so you don’t block the footway while waiting to cross.

WESTER COATES TERRACE AND WEST COATES

DRIVERS

  • When turning into Wester Coates Terrace, give priority to anyone walking, wheeling or cycling in either direction. You can stop and wait in position A if you need to, and the space is free.Photo showing waiting areas for drivers at Wester Coates Terrace junction with West Coates.
  • When leaving Wester Coates Terrace, wait at position B to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists.  Only move to position C if the space is clear, so you don’t block the cycle path and pedestrian route.

CYCLISTS

  • You have priority over vehicles entering or leaving Wester Coates Terrace.

PEDESTRIANS

  • Stay to the north side of the bi-directional cycle path. You have priority over vehicles entering and leaving.

ROSEBURN PLACE AND ROSEBURN STREET

The pavement along Roseburn Street, crossing over Roseburn Place is a continuous footway. This means that pedestrians have priority and drivers must always stop and give way when leaving and entering Roseburn Place.

CONTINUOUS FOOTWAYS

We've also installed continous footways at the following locations.

DRIVERS

  • Coates Gardens – The southern end of Coates Gardens is one-way, so you can exit Coates Gardens onto Haymarket Terrace , but can’t go the other way
  • Rosebery Crescent – The southern end of Rosebery Crescent is one-way so you can  exit Rosebery Crescent onto Haymarket Terrace but can’t go the other way
  • Stafford Street is a one-way street  -   Traffic can exit Stafford Street onto Melville Street but not access
