Why work in building standards

Tony appreciates the career opportunities

and he sees how building standards can open up more avenues in the construction industry.

The one thing I love about my job ...

is how much of a close team and how well-organised we are as well as how we help each other to reach our end goal. Also, the fact that we are making a considerable difference to encourage a safer, energy efficient and sustainable construction industry.

Why I love working in Edinburgh's building standards team

Coming from a building surveying academic background I was dead set on that as a career. But, after experiencing the impact building standards has on the construction industry, I knew this was a career path I had to explore. Working in Edinburgh is an excellent opportunity for novice and experienced surveyors who want to progress in building standards. The wide spectrum of applications and projects that come through the team tests your knowledge, giving you the opportunity to learn at a comfortable pace and become amongst the best of building standards surveying professionals.

What's great about working for the Council?

The Council is a fantastic place to work in. I’d only worked in the private sector before - transitioning to the public sector makes you really appreciate a comfortable work-life balance. Everyone in the Council benefits from this. You can really focus on your work but also appreciate your personal and social life. The Council also provides great learning and development opportunities. As well as online and in-house development, you can study by day release to enhance your knowledge and become more valuable to the service.

What's great about living here?

I live just outside Edinburgh, in Livingston, and the commute is never an issue as there are so many options for travel. Working in Edinburgh especially allows you to enjoy and experience the vibrant and diverse social and nightlife which is on offer week in and week out, especially around the festival period.
