Free school meals and help with schoolwear

Who qualifies for food and clothing grants

We provide children from low income families with free school meals and money to help towards buying school clothes. Young people over the age of 16 staying on at school and living on their own may also apply.

Find out if you match the conditions to claim free school meals on the Scottish Government website.

If you match these conditions and do not receive any element of Working Tax Credit you can also claim assistance with schoolwear.

We accept scanned copies of your evidence by email.

The award

Each award is valid for one school year.

The meals award provides a pupil with one free school meal each day they attend school.

The assistance with schoolwear award is

  • £43 for primary
  • £50 for secondary.

Assistance with schoowear is paid directly in to your bank account.

It is our aim to pay eligible applicants within two weeks of a properly completed application being received.

If you have not received a payment and more than two weeks have passed since your application, please

  • Check your email (including junk file) to check for an acknowledgement or information request.  If you have been asked to supply information, please send this to us.
  • Check your bank account for payment - this may have been paid before you received your award letter.
  • Submit a new application marked ‘duplicate’.

Once we approve your award

We will send you a letter and notify your school of your award.
