Free school meals and help with schoolwear
Who qualifies for food and clothing grants
We provide pupils from low income families with free school meals and money to help towards buying school clothes. We call this your 'award'.
Find out if you match the conditions to claim free school meals on the Scottish Government website.
If you match these conditions you can also get free milk and a clothing grant.
All children in primary 1 to 3 receive free school meals, but not free milk or a clothing grant. You must apply.
Each award is valid for one school year.
The meals award provides a pupil with one school meal and milk each day they attend school.
The clothing grant is £100 for each child. We pay one grant per year, per child, into your bank account.
Renewing your award
We’ve made some changes this year to make things easier.
Most families will get an automatic award for the 2018/19 school year. This means they will not need to fill in a new application form each year.
We sent a letter about this to all families who received an award in 2017/18. If you did not receive a letter you may need to apply again.
You get an automatic award if you meet all three of these conditions - you
- got an award in 2017/18
- get Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction
- get Income Support, income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance or any income-related element of employment and support allowance.
Tax credits, universal credit and support under Immigration and Asylum Act
If you got an award in 2017/18 and you get tax credits or universal credit, you do not need to make a new application. However, you need to give us proof that you still meet the criteria. Send us all pages of your award letter for the period 6 April 2018 to 5 April 2019.
If you got an award in the 2017/18 and you get support under the Immigration and Asylum Act, you do not need to make a new application. Ask your support worker to write a letter confirming you still receive this support.
When we confirm you are eligible we will make an award.
You will not get an automatic award if
- you did not get an award or did not apply in the 2017/18 school year
- you do not currently get housing benefit or a reduction on your council tax
- your child is due to start primary 1 in August 2018, even if you got an award for an older brother or sister
- your child is old enough to leave school
You need to apply.
If you have a child who is old enough to leave school and you got an award for them in 2017/18, you need to tell us if they are staying on at high school. They may also be entitled to get an Education Maintenance Allowance.
