How to claim Housing Benefit

Who can claim

Housing Benefit can help you pay your rent if you’re unemployed, on a low income or claiming benefits. It’s being replaced by Universal Credit.

You can only make a new claim for Housing Benefit if the following apply.

You have savings less than £16,000 and either

  • you have reached state pension age

or

  • you’re in supported, sheltered or temporary housing.

You may still get Housing Benefit if your savings are more than £16,000 but you or your partner gets the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit.
