Changes to site layout and traffic management at Union Street / Antigua Street w/c 18 April

There will be changes to the existing site and traffic management arrangements in the above locations.

These changes are expected to be implemented from Monday 18 April 2022 to progress associated tram works and are expected to be in place until June 2022. Pedestrian access will be maintained during these works, including access to local businesses.

There may be a requirement to close Union Street within this time period for approximately 1 week.  This will be notified via on-street advance warning signs and the project's main communication channels.

Construction Works

Sacyr, Farrans, Neopul (SFN), and Morrison Utility Services (MUS) roles involve excavation to allow utility diversions, installation of infrastructure, and public realm improvements which includes any heritage and archaeology works.

In order to progress hard landscaping works we are required to establish small, localised sites in the area.

All works will be undertaken in line with the Code of Construction Practice which details, amongst other things, acceptable levels of noise and vibration. The Code of Construction Practice can be found here.

Traffic Management

Traffic management arrangements for these works are approved jointly with members of the city's Traffic Management Review Panel, including Lothian Buses and the emergency services.

To accommodate these works, one lane of traffic will continue to travel northbound from York Place with access to London Road via a right-hand turn and straight ahead to access Gayfield Square, Leith Walk and Annandale Street. Traffic will be able to travel southbound from Leith Walk with a turn left option to London Road or straight on past Greenside Place for Leith Street, York Place and Broughton Street.

In this phase there will be no right turn northbound onto Leith Walk for traffic travelling from London Road. Access will be by travelling round the construction site on Picardy Place and back towards Leith Walk.

The temporary loading bay area on Union Street will be maintained during these works.  View the final landscaping designs for the project.

The project will continue to assess the traffic management arrangement throughout the construction period and make amends where required.
