With approval granted to proceed with completing the original Line 1a to Newhaven, the project has now completed a six-month early contractor involvement (ECI) period with the two contractors (Sacyr, Farrans, Neopul Joint Venture for the Infrastructure and Systems Contract and Morrison Utility Services Ltd for the Swept Path Contract).

The new part of the line will run for 4.69 kilometres/2.91 miles, connecting Leith and Newhaven to the current end of the Edinburgh tram line at York Place with 8 new stops (see route map below). This will offer residents access to high capacity light rail which will sit alongside the existing bus service as well as improved cycling and walking infrastructure along the route.

Construction work is set to get under way in mid-November 2019. Edinburgh Trams are timetabled to take their first passengers to and from Newhaven in 2023.

The proposed project has been incredibly cautious in development.  The project team have sought assurance throughout the process and have reflected the Council’s lessons learned from the first phase of tram within the structure of the project. The cost of £207.3m has been carefully arrived at, taking account of the procured contractor costs, risk and client costs.
