Main construction works to restart - 23 June 2020

Main construction works for the Edinburgh’s Trams to Newhaven project re-started on Monday 15 June 2020 in line with the Scottish Government’s Phase 3 steady state operaton (only where physical distancing can be maintained).

This encompassed the existing sites on Lindsay Road, Melrose Drive and Constitution Street which started on Monday 15 June. In addition, main construction works on Leith Walk from Elm Row to Crown Place started on Monday 22 June.

All works will be carried out in accordance with Scottish Government guidance.

Trams to Newhaven will add 4.69 kilometres/2.91 miles of track in both directions, connecting Leith and Newhaven to the current end of the Edinburgh tram line at York Place with 8 new stops (see route map below). This will offer residents access to high capacity light rail which will sit alongside the existing bus service as well as improved cycling and walking infrastructure along the route.

Construction commenced in November 2019 with Edinburgh Trams timetabled to take their first passengers to and from Newhaven in Spring 2023. Download the Construction Phasing Map (PDF 91KB). Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during construction. The hours for construction work are Monday - Friday 7am - 7pm and Saturday 8am - 1pm.
