Traffic management arrangements at Foot of the Walk from 6 April 2022

Details of traffic management arrangements at the Foot of the Walk from 6 April 2022

Traffic management arrangements at the Foot of the Walk (FoTW) will be changing from Wednesday 6 April 2022 to facilitate further construction works.

These arragements will be undertaken in two separate phases:

Phase 1

Traffic management arrangements will see Manderston Street and Crown Place closed at their junctions with Leith Walk from Wednesday 6 April 2022 with site set up continuing into the weekend of 9/10 April 2022.  All main diversions, including access to Tesco and Wonder World Soft Play, will be via Easter Road. Traffic movements between Great Junction Street and Duke Street heading both ways will be under 2-way traffic management. There will be no left hand turn from Kirk Street heading north with vehicles only able to turn right heading south on Leith Walk.

The bus stop located at the foot of the walk will move into the centre of the street.

These works are expected to be in place for 8 - 10 weeks.

Phase 2

During the second phase of the works, Manderston Street will re-open to city bound traffic with Crown Place remaining closed at its junction with Leith Walk. This will become Lothian Buses main diversion route which will require further no parking or waiting arrangements to be implemented and enforced on Manderston Street and Gordon Street.  In addition, there will no access to city bound traffic from Duke Street with Easter Road and Bonnington Road being the main diversion routes.

These arrangements are expected to be implemented mid to late May 2022 with exact dates being communicated via the project’s communication channels.

The junction at Crown Street on to Leith Walk will be maintained throughout the duration of the works while Jane Street will remain closed at the junction with Leith Walk.

The current city bound running lane will close and traffic will be diverted to the new road surface on the west side. This will enable works on the east side to start which will include the establishment of kerb lines, improved public realm and the creation of a new carriageway, and are expected to be completed by Autumn 2022.

You can view details of the traffic management arrangements for Phase 1.

Leith Walk will remain closed to all northbound traffic between the Annandale Street and FoTW.

Other junctions on Leith Walk may close as and when required as works progress. Further details on the timings for each junction closure will be communicated via the project’s communication channels.

Bus stops will remain in place on Leith Walk.  Details of any bus diversions can be found at www.lothianbuses.com .

A Support for Business package is in place, devised in consultation with businesses in the area, which includes a local voucher scheme, an ‘open for business’ campaign across a range of media, and a business continuity fund. Full details can be found on the project website in the ‘Supporting Businesses’ section.

A Logistics Hubs to support businesses remain operational near the Foot of the Walk to help with deliveries and dispatches. Help will also be at hand for residents expecting large deliveries such as appliances or furniture.

Localised works are ongoing to construct the new cycle lanes. As a result, the existing cycle diversion routes will remain in place until completion.

Loading and parking will be available in the newly constructed bays on the west side of Leith Walk as part of the final designs.  Pedestrian footways and access to shops, hospitality and leisure units on the east side will be maintained at all times. During these works, footpath widths will range from 2.0m to 1.5m. In some instances, this may need to be reduced further.
