York Place works completed ahead of schedule

The Trams to Newhaven project has successfully completed the decommissioning and removal of the temporary York Place tram stop ahead of schedule, allowing Edinburgh Trams to resume services in the city centre earlier than expected.

Works began on 9 February 2022 and were initially estimated to take until April 2022 to complete. However these were completed early and, following a period of testing and commissioning on the existing tram infrastructure, including the cross-over on York Place, Edinburgh Trams resumed services to St Andrew Square on Monday 28 March 2022.

City council transport convener Lesley Macinnes said: “Progress is continuing apace on the Trams to Newhaven project, and the return of the tram service to Princes Street and St Andrew Square marks a key stage in work to connect the existing line to the new one. Once complete, the new service will provide a sustainable, reliable mode of transport to the north of the city, benefiting communities along the route and beyond.”

Work on the creation of a permanent tram stop on Picardy Place is scheduled to be completed by Autumn 2022, which will be followed by a period of testing and commissioning on the whole route. Trams remain on schedule to be operational by spring 2023.
