Offers and pre-employment checks (proof of right to work and references)

If you’re offered a role, you’ll receive an email with your conditional offer of employment. Our offer is subject to the successful completion of pre-employment checks. You’ll need to review and accept the offer online before we start any pre-employment checks. The pre-employment checks required will depend on the role, however everyone will need to provide proof of the right to work in the UK and references.

If you have questions related to your new role or the documentation we require, please contact the job's hiring manager.

Proof of your right to work

You will need to provide documents that prove your Right to Work in the UK.

  • UK citizens: The document to prove your Right to Work in the UK is normally your passport, but if you do not have a passport then we need a copy of your birth certificate along with a document with your National Insurance number on it.

  • Non-British or Irish citizens: It's likely you'll need to evidence your right to work in the UK using the Home Office’s online Prove your right to work to an employer: Overview - GOV.UK

  • Other groups: EU, EEA, and Swiss Citizens, individuals who hold a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), Biometric Residence Card (BRC) or Frontier Worker Permit (FWP) and those who only hold digital proof of their immigration status in the UK (e-Visa’s), must evidence their right to work using the Home Office online service. We can no longer accept a physical document for these groups.

If asked, you will need to provide us with your date of birth and your share code, which you will get online at the Gov.uk website eVisas: access and use your online immigration status - GOV.UK

References

We ask for references so we can check the information to support our appointment decisions. We will always ask for these from the referee and not from you.

  • External candidates: For permanent, temporary, casual, and volunteer appointments, we need a minimum of two written references. At least one referee must be from your current or most recent employer. If you are not currently in employment, or your last employer cannot provide a reference because the organisation no longer exists, then a character reference can be accepted. If you have just left school, the reference could be from your head or guidance teacher.
  • Internal candidates: In most cases we do not need a reference. However, we will ask for references (two of them) for posts that are regulated by the SSSC or Care Inspectorate or if a new PVG membership check is required for your new post.
