Pay - Local Government employees

As we are an accredited Living Wage employer paying the Scottish Local Government Living Wage, we guarantee that you will earn more than the National Minimum Wage regardless of the role you choose.

Pay steps

  • Pay steps recognise your ongoing development in your role.
  • You’ll progress incrementally up the pay scale for your grade through annual pay steps, until you reach the top of scale.
  • Pay steps apply to Local Government employees on grades one to 12 employed on a permanent, temporary, or fixed term basis.
  • A pay step is normally two spinal column points. If you're one salary scale point below the top of your grade, then you’ll receive one spinal column point as your pay step.

Pay steps are not applied to colleagues working on a casual, supply, intermittent or locum basis.

Pay awards

  • Pay progression is not the same as a pay award. National pay awards are negotiated on an annual basis between COSLA and the Scottish Joint Council (SJC) Trades Unions.
  • Pay awards are normally applied from 1 April for Local Government Employees (LGEs), Craft, and Chief Officers. Where pay awards are agreed after this date the changes to pay will be backdated to the 1st of April.
