Throughout Prince Philip’s extraordinary lifetime, he showed great appreciation for this city and its people. During his countless visits to the Capital as Duke of Edinburgh, he regularly reached out to fellow veterans and serving personnel and thousands of our children and students, both through the Duke of Edinburgh Award and his longstanding links with our Universities.

As Patron of so many Edinburgh-based charities, he won a special place in the hearts of Scottish people. It’s with great sadness that I share on behalf of the city our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to all the members of the Royal Family at this very sad time. It has been my privilege and honour to personally represent His Royal Highness in Edinburgh. Just like his consort to the monarch, his legacy will be longstanding.

  55. B. O. Boateng Says:

It is with regret and deep sorrow to learn of the sudden departure of Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh yesterday.

His is a great loss to mankind especially the young people of the British Commonwealth of nations.

His Duke of Edinburghs Award scheme like probably the junior chamber international of the United States is the most educative and mentoring scheme I have heard of around the world.

The discipline and tanacity of purpose for good works it gave to me as a student at play did a lot to form my character as an individual.

It was my enthusiasm at play that earned my father B. B. Boateng, a second visit to the Royal Palace during the Gold Award and international conference in November 1976 on behalf of the Commonwealth Students Children Society of which he was founder and General secretary. May the good Lord console the Royal family the British people, the British Commonwealth of nations and the world at large for our loss of such a great man who gave meaning and purpose to many young people in the commonwealth.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.

    Amen

The Duke of Edinburgh was a marvelous man who was very much admired for his constant support and loyalty to you and his children what must have been difficult for him not to follow a career path in the Navy. I had the honour of meeting your majesty at Truro, Cornwall when I was in the Brownies and we also had the honour of meeting Prince Charles when he visited our village, Cawsand, Cornwall several years ago. Like all families you have had your ups and downs but you take what life brings you with strength and courage and like all families you do what you think is right at the time but unlike most families you are in the public eye which makes everything so much more difficult for you. Our thoughts are with you at this very sad time and your country will do you proud in remembering a good man.

We are so sad at the passing of the His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh. He was certainly one of the reducing number of people from the 'silent generation' who we owe so much to. If it needed doing, he did it - if it needed saying he said it, he didn't just pontificate from the side-lines but rather he rolled up his sleeves and got stuck in. He and his generation (our parents generation) defended the freedoms that we have today and that we all too often take for granted.

I met the Duke at Buckingham Palace in the mid 70s when he presented me with my Badge and Certificate for my D of E Gold Award. I had taken my mother as my guest. I had done lots of interesting things for the Gold Award including a ride across Dartmoor for a week on horse back but I had just about managed to pass my interest section by helping a local budgerigar breeder hatch some young. Of course this was the subject he asked me about and he made shy 16 year old laugh when he asked if they were homing ones! I thought he was pulling my leg and it was only last year that I found out the Queen kept her own flock of homing budgies! I then had the pleasure of talking to him again at a school D of E event, and I can remember it all so well even to this day. Thank you the Duke of Edinburgh for putting me so at ease and giving me such lovely memories.

    One of 'us' has gone....
A man of courage, dedication and duty...to his Queen, his wife, his children and to the country which he defended with honour in dark times fighting tyranny.
A man, whilst not without faults, who was just a very normal individual like the rest of us.
A man who overcame the many difficulties he faced as a child and went on to achieve many great things in life, the most significant.... in my books, that of being a caring and loving Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather...giving to them what you did not have yourself as a child....a rock on which they could build steady foundations.
Whilst you may have gone from sight you have left a formidable legacy behind which will continue.
You and the Queen have provided so much to the people of this country, it will be with a heavy heart that our Queen will continue...hopefully the love from us, her people, will add in a small way to that of her family... to help her in those sad moments to come... when you are not physically there to support her.
I think you will always be beside her and the love story will continue until you both meet again somewhere over the rainbow.
What has glaringly stood out over the last two days since your passing, was the loving looks captured by the cameras over many decades...always there...never changing.
For your unrelenting dedication to duty supporting our Queen and your country, I put you amongst the great personages that this country has had...you sit in my mind next to Churchill and Nelson.
I salute you Philip, as a man and as our Prince.
Rest in peace after a 'job well done' matey....

Your Majesty, in the same manner, I saw your humbleness and heard your kindness while you were inspecting the Royal Guard of Honour presented by the Sri Lanka Navy at Colombo Air Port on 21st October 1981, in which, I was the Officer who reported the Royal GOH to Your Majesty. At this occasion, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh had highly commended and conveyed his appreciation about the smartness, turnout and the conduct of the Royal Guard of Honour to those who took part in the GOH through the then President of Sri Lanka, H.E. JR Jayewardane.

Your Majesty, and the rest of the members of the Royal Family, we respect His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh forever.
May His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh Rest in
    Peace.

  571. Michelle Bunyan Says:

From the island of Malta, my mother and I offer our condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Royal family and the family of the late Duke of Edinburgh on the sad news that he has 'Crossed the Bar' on the 9th April 2021. This sad occasion brings back memories of when my late father who served in the Royal Navy formed part of the guard at the 1st Earl of Mountbatten's funeral service in 1979.

As we pay our respects by following her Majesty's requests by observing the funeral from afar, may the Lord grant him eternal rest. We trust that all will find comfort in his final ceremonial funeral.

To close our message using an extract of the poem Crossing the Bar, penned by the great Lord Alfred Tennyson

"And may there be no sadness of farewell,
    When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar."

The Duke of Edinburgh was one of a kind. It is only now that he has gone that we are truly seeing this wonderful man in a new light. The things he has achieved throughout his life, both for the Queen and her family; Great Britain and for millions of people around the world is astonishing and it has been a revelation and a joy to listen to the adulation for him that has been shown from all walks of life. To show such incite; pursue such passions for wildlife and engineering which would improve the world to name but a few and keep a balance between being a husband; father; grandfather and great grandfather; the formal and being simply human was remarkable. I hope memories of Prince Phillip will sustain, support and keep the Queen laughing for as long as she lives. Theirs was a true romance and I hope the love they shared will keep the Queen forever young. My thoughts are with her Majesty and the Royal family. May he in rest in peace. With love.

I always meant to write to Prince Philip and thank him for the amazing transformation the Duke of Edinburgh scheme brought about in my son and many of his friends. Unfortunately I never got around to it, and was so so sad when I realised that I was too late. There are so many funny anecdotes that the boys have from those times, I think I might cause this book of condolence to crash! Anyway, suffice to say, my very shy, sensitive boy was transformed and some very sad gremlins removed from him in the process of completing this scheme.
Thankyou Prince Phillip, I think the boys would have made you howl with laughter at what they got up to.
