Multisystemic therapy (MST) is an intensive family and community-based intervention. It targets the causes of anti-social behaviour in young people aged 11 to 17 who could be at risk of out-of-home placement. A growing body of evidence points to the effectiveness of MST.
The goal of MST is to keep young people in school, at home and out of trouble.
An MST practitioner is available 24/7 to families in treatment. Appointments are made to meet their needs. Treatment length is typically between three to five months. The goal is to empower the family to take responsibility for making and maintaining gains.
Interventions are designed to
- help parents learn how to manage disobedience and aggressive behaviour
- improve family relations
- decrease drug and alcohol use
- stop the young person from re-offending
- increase association with positive friends and activities
and improve the young person's
- attendance at school
- academic performance.
