Spaces for people - temporary changes in place

Measures being removed

In June councillors agreed to remove some of Spaces for People measures. They made this decision after a major public consultation and in-depth assessments.

Most of the measures we're removing are in our shopping streets. These helped people travel by

  • foot
  • wheel
  • bike

when visiting local shops.

The measures helped people to stay two metres apart. In some areas though, they had an impact on things like

  • deliveries
  • parking
  • bus services.

We'll be keeping parts of some measures such as footway widening.

In the longer term, we are planning to improve the quality of space in our town centres. We've set this out in the City Mobility Plan. It's part of our 20-Minute Neighbourhood programme too. Our guidance on how we design Edinburgh streets also supports walking and cycling in our town centres.
