Road safety education for schools

Road safety and active travel liasion officers help schools to promote road safety throughout the year.

Primary schools

Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO's) are usually P6 or P7 pupils who lead on road safety education in their school.

They

  • work with the Council road safety officers and help to promote road safety in their school
  • keep a notice board up to date and promote active travel to school
  • hold competitions in school
  • organise and run campaigns like ParkSmart designed to persuade parents not to park at the gates.

JRSO's are elected at the end of May each year and begin working at the beginning of the new school term in August.

High schools

Sixth years are invited to attend the annual Young Driver event held at the Corn Exchange where they learn about the risks and responsibilities of becoming a new driver.

There are drama performances and other events organised for both age groups throughout the year.
