Idling vehicles

Engine idling

We want to reduce traffic pollution in Edinburgh.

Vehicles emit pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) even when they are idling. These toxins are linked to health problems such as asthma, heart disease and cancer.

If you turn your engine off while your vehicle is not moving you will help to make Edinburgh a healthier, cleaner city.

You can be issued a Fixed Penalty Notice of £20 or be reported to the Procurator Fiscal if you don't switch off your engine when asked to.
