Cammo Estate restoration project

Cammo Estate Local Nature Reserve has a unique heritage. The reserve needs investment to restore its features and develop the parks as visitor attractions.

In 2016 the estates home farm building was sold off for private development and the profits were ringfenced for site improvements.

In March 2017 we decided that we should apply for a Heritage Lottery Fund stage one development grant to secure funds for the restoration, using the home farm profits as matched funding.

The funding will let us develop detailed master plan proposals for the estate, which will include designs for the buildings and landscape.

If our round one bid is successful, we will work out a detailed

  • conservation management plan
  • activity plan
  • visitor services business plan
  • ten year fully costed management and maintenance plan

to support a round two application.

The project looks to

  • restore the estate
  • develop it as a major visitor destination which showcases its unique landscape and historical features.
  • create opportunities for learning and volunteering
  • engender a sense of pride in the neighbouring communities through engaging groups and partners.

It is likely that the project will cost around £5m.

We will carry out public consultation and research to inform the master plan proposals.

Although nothing has been decided yet some of the proposals may include restoring

  • views from Cammo House to the tower
  • the walled kitchen garden
  • the Ornamental canal
  • the pinetum
  • or consolidating the stable block as a community venue and base for our partners or as a café

  • entrances and develop circuit routes for walking, running and healthy activities
  • car parking facilities

  • consolidating Cammo House
  • conserving or bringing into active management all trees, woodlands and hedges and improve biodiversity
  • using management and maintenance regimes to ensure the park achieves Green Flag status
  • developing a programme of events and activities that interests a range of park users and offers volunteer and learning opportunities.

Community engagement events

Thanks to everyone who came to the first round of events that we held on 11, 14 and 16 September.

At the events we

  • informed you about the application
  • gathered ideas on what you do and don’t want to see in the stage 1 bid.
  • found out your favourite walking routes
  • heard your views in questionnaires and surveys carried out by the Cammo Estate friends group.

You can download the design options developed from the feedback received below.

The second round of community consultation events were held at the Cammo Estate Lodge at the west end of Cammo Road on

  • Friday 19 January 11am to 3pm
  • Saturday 20 January 10am to 2pm
  • Sunday 21 January 2pm to 4pm.

We discussed the possible draft design ideas produced following the first consultation held in September 2017. The suggestions and ideas made then aided the formulation of the latest design proposals. It is important to state they are still design ideas, nothing has been agreed. The feedback received recently will further shape the design which will be presented in due course.

We are also now beginning to look at possibilities for forging and establishing longer term partnership working with likeminded organisations and groups of people who have a shared interest in Cammo Estate and its environs, the restoration project or specific individual aspects such as training initiatives

  • conservation of cultural heritage
  • food production
  • biodiversity promotion and recording
  • woodland management
  • educational provision
  • tool use / maintenance workshops.

We would be happy to hear from you or your organisation in relation to this aspect of the project.

Due to the Heritage Lottery Fund announcing a restructure of how it administers grant funding, our timescales have changed and the type of grant application we make may change too. We are working closely with HLF advisors and seeking advice from experienced colleagues to establish our best options.

Look out for the next information briefing scheduled for springtime, in the meantime more information regarding the site can be found on The Friends of Cammo website.
