Would
you like your children to be able to walk or cycle safely
to and from school?
Over
the years, fewer and fewer children are walking to school.
This affects us all: as a result, our children are less
healthy, there is more traffic congestion and pollution
(the school run makes up about 20% of peak morning traffic),
and our roads are not as safe.
We are
working on many ways to make our children safe on their
way to and from school – introducing 20 mph zones,
appointing school travel co-ordinators, and encouraging
schools to teach cycling and road safety, as well as promoting
exercise.
You
can help too. Here’s some important tips:
Don’t park on School Keep Clear zigzag markings or
near school gates – in fact, try not to park near
the school at all.
Observe 20mph speed limits, including the part-time 20mph
zones while the lights on warning signs are flashing.
Always watch out for children: some schools have breakfast
clubs and have extra-curricular activities after school.
Encourage your own children to walk, cycle or use public
transport if it is available.
Watch out for Safer Routes signs whenever you are driving.
