Ground Investigation Works

Ground and site investigation work has been programmed for a number of locations between York Place and Newhaven, starting in Lindsay Road in the week commencing 20 May 2019.

The essential pre-enabling works programmed by the tram project's Systems and Infrastructure contractor Sacyr, Farrans, Neopul (SFN) will involve SFN carrying out detailed ground investigation works in 25 separate sites along the route. The work will be carried out in sections of approximately 100 metres at a time and is programmed to be completed by mid-July 2019. Those who will be directly affected will recieve notification via letter ahead of any works commencing.

You can find out more about when works will take place by downloading the phasing maps and then see in detail what the traffic management will look like in your local area by downloading one of the local area maps below:

Capital Roads Scheme Works

The capital roads scheme works* that are due to begin on Abercromby Place on 27 May have been brought forward from 2020 to make sure the road network surrounding the tram construction area is in the best possible condition for when traffic diversions are put in place.

The work, part of the Council's investment in roads and footways across the city (£125m over four years), will include resurfacing the carriageway, pedestrian access and public realm improvements and traffic signal upgrades well as signalising the junction at Easter Road/Lochend Road and Duke Street.

Information about the ground/site investigation and road resurfacing projects will be communicated to directly-affected residents and businesses in advance of work starting.

Plans for constructing the line

We will construct the line using a phased 'one-dig' approach. This means we will not reopen a worksite until all utility and infrastructure works have been completed.

By following this approach, the level of disruption to you will be reduced. For example, if your bus stop is displaced, the location of your new bus stop will remain in the same place for the duration of the works. Additionally, large worksites will allow us to be efficient with our teams on the ground. Should an issue arise where work cannot take place in a specific area, we will have the flexibility to deploy them elsewhere in the worksite. This will allow us to avoid unecessary delays and successfully deliver the project on time.

You can view each phase and expected length of time, overlaid on a map of the route, by downloading the 'Phasing Plan' below.

Final Business Case (FBC)

A report accompanying the FBC was presented by the Trams to Newhaven project team at the Transport and Enviroment Committee’s meeting on Thursday 28 February who reccomended it for approval to Full Council.

The FBC sets out the robust strategic, economic, financial, commercial and management case for taking trams to Newhaven and outlines the project cost and timescales for councillors and was approved at a meeting of Full Council on 14 March .
