The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 provided a right of responsible access over much of Scotland's land and inland water. This has merely enshrined what was a long tradition of understanding between those who manage and work Scotland's landscape and those who visit and enjoy it. Farmers and other landowners across the Pentlands have long welcomed visitors who respect their requirement to manage the land. The Pentland Hills Ranger Service, established in the 1970s has played a pivotal role in acting as a liaison between visitors and land managers. Rangers have educated generations of children and their parents about the Country Code. This new Scottish Outdoor Access Code builds on that previous work, but is adapted to consider the wide range of recreational activities which you can take part in the Scottish countryside as well as the more varied land uses you may find yourself in. The Access Code gives guidance on how to access the countryside responsibly, whether walking on your own, in a group or taking your dog. The Code provides guidance too for cycling, mountain biking, horse riding and various water sports. For information and advice about accessing reservoirs, visit the Scottish Water Access Code Website or for full details of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code please go to the Access Code Website, or do not hesitate to contact the Ranger Service. |
