ROUTES AND TRAILS

The Pentland Hills Regional Park offers a great many choices of routes for you to enjoy. Each season in the hills has its own characteristics and no visit fails to stimulate your senses or revive your spirit!

The Pentland Hills has a fascinating history and much is locked up in the eclectic mix of place names. You'll discover these as you plan and enjoy your hill walks. Check out our list of place names and their meanings: Pentland Place Names (word document, 39K).

Four waymarked routes are available. Follow the signs on posts around the route and pick up the trail leaflets to get the most out of your walk.

Capital View Walk
From Hillend look out for the Castle posts for a fairly strenuous 3 mile walk. Take in the magnificent views across the Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.

Glencorse View Walk
From Flotterstone Visitor Centre follow the Heron marked post. An easy walk takes you along the Glencorse burn to the reservoir. Watch out for bird life on the way. Great in any season.

Harlaw Woodland Walk

From Harlaw House Centre. Follow the Squirrel marked posts 2 miles around the reservoir. Enjoy a variety of woodland scenes. Especially alive in Spring and Autumn.

Torduff Water Walk
This walk starts at Bonaly Country Park for a short 2-mile route around moorland and reservoirs. Torduff reveals much of its Victorian legacy and water birds are regularly seen. Don't fail to check out the magnificent view across Edinburgh and beyond on the return trip!

Take a Hike! And Take the Bus!
Many Pentland walks are accessible from bus stops. Why not leave the car at home for a change. Just hop on the bus and out to the hills. Check out our suggestions: How to get to the Pentland Hills (PDF, 669Kb).
