Most come for the fresh air, peace and quiet and to be surrounded by nature and the elements. This may involve an active energetic activity or enjoying a picnic with family and friends at our picnic sites at Flotterstone, Bonaly, Hillend or Harlaw. There are over 100km of signposted routes available across the hills enjoyed by over 600, 000 visitors annually. We aim to provide, where possible or appropriate, multi-use paths that can accommodate the varying means by which people enjoy the hills. Making good use of paths too, will ensure the visitor can minimise erosion and disturbance to wildlife and land management around the park. Most who come to the hills walk around, over, through or across the hills, which themselves offer gentle as well as strenuous options. Routes around the Park's many reservoirs provide an alternative choice of walk. Mountain bikers have options through a number of routes, which have been identified. Horse riders will be making a return to many routes across the Regional Park. With walkers, bikers and possibly horse
riders all making use of the same routes it is important that all users
comply with the advice given in the
Access Code. Rangers and Voluntary Rangers will be on patrol throughout
the Regional Park to provide advice and assistance. In addition, please
look out for and pay attention to, posted notices and signs recommending
actions you can take to ensure you are accessing the area responsibly,
safely and hopefully enjoyably too! The Pentland Hills Ranger Service leads a number of guided walks and other events throughout the year. If you're interested in finding out a bit more about the Pentlands, whether you are a newcomer or a regular, we'd be delighted to welcome you along. Check out our events section for this year's dates. Although the Pentland Hills are close to major towns and cities, when low cloud, snow, heavy rain or any combination of inclement weather hits, they can soon feel remote, and potentially dangerous. The Pentland Hills Ranger Service offer reasonably priced map and compass courses. These courses provide you with the necessary skills of map reading and navigation to improve your understanding of how to read the landscape and increase your safety and enjoyment of the hills. More details in the events section. Knowing a little more about the landscape and wildlife which surround you, on your visit to the Pentlands, will help get more out of your visit. The Ranger Service offers opportunities for you to participate in Biodiversity surveys, checking out the local plant and animal populations. Training and support is given in the company of a Ranger, and you can take part in a walk with a purpose, knowing that your finding will benefit the overall management of the Park's wildlife. Biodiversity training days are also provided, where an in-depth investigation of a particular plant or animal group is explored. Again for further details please click on events.
