EVENTS

Whether you are a regular, or a first time visitor to the Pentland Hills Regional Park, the Ranger Service offers opportunities throughout the year to help you get to know this well loved place.
You could join us on a guided walk, where often we take you "Behind the Scenes", to discover the "inner working" of life in the Pentlands.

If you have an interest in creatures great and small, our Biodiversity training days will help you identify the wildlife all around you. You may like to join the Ranger on one of our Surveying days to help us track down some of the Park's more elusive species.

2008 Events

Even if you are a regular to the Pentlands there is always something new and interesting to find out or to share about your favourite place. Join the Ranger Service and explore history and wildlife as well as some great walks. Join us to seek out the hills wildlife on one of our biodiversity days or bring the family along on an Activity afternoon with plenty of fun games and activities that will reveal more about the Pentlands. Map & Compass Courses

These popular and enjoyable courses are for beginners, and people who require a refresher. Using progressive methods in a tried and tested formula, the course will develop your map reading skill and give you the confidence to navigate in poor visibility. The group size is restricted to eight to allow personal instruction with a Ranger experienced in hillwalking and instruction. The Ranger also has a wealth of local information to increase your enjoyment and understanding of the Pentland Hills. Whilst participants should be reasonably fit, the course will endeavour to accommodate all levels of ability.

The Map and Compass courses are held over a weekend in the Regional Park.

The Saturday programme includes indoor theory sessions with plenty of practical exercises and a night navigation exercise (don’t worry you won’t be on your own!). On the Sunday we put into practice and reinforce all the skills you have learnt the by going on a local hill walk (5-6 miles).

Participants must be over 16yrs. The cost is £40.
If you have any queries or concerns or would like details for dates and booking please contact the Ranger Service.

Wildlife Surveying and Training

The Ranger Service has an extensive programme of wildlife surveys planned. Plants and animals of national and local importance, linked to Local Biodiversity Action Plans are surveyed across the Regional Park. An experienced ranger leads the survey and training in survey method and identification can be given on the day or as a dedicated training workshop. Beginners are especially welcome and surveying is free of charge. For more information please contact us on 0131 445 3383 or email us.
