Lord Provost message of condolence to Mayor of quake-stricken Christchurch

Lord Provost George Grubb has written to the Mayor of Christchurch in the wake of the devastating earthquake which hit the New Zealand city yesterday.

The Lord Provost's letter, written on behalf of the people of Edinburgh, extends heartfelt condolences to the people of Christchurch following the natural disaster, which has left at least 75 dead and wrought devastation across the city.

Lord Provost George Grubb said: "The news from Christchurch is heartbreaking and I'm sure everyone in Edinburgh shares my horror at the scenes of devastation we have seen on the news. Scotland and New Zealand are very closely connected through many generations of migration in both directions and we share a real sense of kinship, which makes us feel the shock of this disaster very keenly. On behalf of the people of Edinburgh, I have written to the Mayor of Christchurch to express our sincere condolences to everyone who has lost a loved one. Our thoughts are with them all during this terrible time."
