Maisie the Cat helps launch new library in South Neighbourhood Office

Acclaimed Edinburgh-based children's author Aileen Paterson joined Councillor Deidre Brock to open the brand new library facilities in the South Neighbourhood Office.

The best-selling writer, a keen supporter of public libraries, entertained kids from Gracemount Primary School and Spinney Lane Nursery with stories about her famous feline character Maisie MacKenzie, the kitten from Morningside.

This well-attended event in Captains Road marked the formal launch of new library and improved reception facilities within the South Neighbourhood Office, which becomes the first local office in the city to house a library.

The new library services on offer include:

  • Under 5's area with parenting collection - babies' board books, picture books, children's DVD's, story CD's, computers, and toys
  • Teenage area - computer bar, comic book collection, and comfy seats
  • IT zone - free internet access, and printing
  • DVDs - collection of films, documentaries and tv series
  • Relaxed reading and cafe area with newspapers and magazines
  • Popular stock collections with the option to self serve - more than 7,000 volumes
  • Information point- assisted access to advice and information on neighbourhood services and partner organisations - future plans for drop-in sessions focusing on local areas of interest e.g. housing support
  • Job search information - Job Centre Plus touch screen facility to support access to employment opportunities

In direct response to customer feedback, the South Neighbourhood Office has also changed the way it delivers reception services by creating a single, integrated reception. This reception area is a new point of contact for all customers, covering Services for Communities, Health and Social Care, Revenues and Benefits, Children and Families, and Criminal Justice and other locally based services such as CHAI, and Working for Families.
