Sparkles galore as Edinburgh's Christmas Light Night returns

Edinburgh's Christmas festivities will get under way tonight with a feast of exciting Light Night events.

Edinburgh 's Christmas 2010 kicks off at 5.15pm with a sparkling array of music, aerial acrobatics and fireworks to mark the opening of the festive programme.

Lord Provost George Grubb will be joined by Tom-Christer Nilsen, Vice Convener of Hordaland County Council in Norway for a small ceremony at the Norwegian Christmas Tree on the Mound - now in its 25th year as an annual gift from the people of Hordaland.

This will be followed by an appearance by French street theatre company Transe Express, who will form a human mobile in a spectacular aerial display 40 metres up in the air to light Edinburgh's Christmas tree in a very special way.

After the light switch-on of the tree and thousands of lights throughout Princes Street Gardens , the event will conclude with a short fireworks display.
