The Midnight Moment 2016

Last year 75,000 revellers from over 80 countries joined the New Year’s Eve celebrations in the capital and organisers promise another stellar line-up to party into 2017.

This year’s programme will be a closely guarded secret until the autumn, but revellers can once again expect a world-class festival atmosphere when the city comes alive with a packed three-day programme of events to welcome 2017. Live music and DJ sets featuring leading artists from Scotland and beyond will rock the Street Party with multiple music stages, giant screens and attractions located throughout the arena, set against the backdrop of the historic Edinburgh Castle.

Hourly Teaser Fireworks launch the celebrations at 9pm, building up to the spectacular Midnight Moment, a coordinated Countdown to the Bells and the magnificent Midnight Fireworks, which sees over six tonnes of pyrotechnics launch from the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle and images beamed to TV screens around the world to an estimated audience of over 1 billion people. Back on the street the traditional singing of Auld Lang Syne, described as Scotland’s gift to the world, will help welcome in the New Year at the ‘Home of Hogmanay’ along with some new surprises for 2017.

Now in its 24th year, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2016/17 programme will be the inaugural New Year festival produced by Al Thomson and Penny Dougherty, Directors for event organisers Unique Events, who produce Edinburgh’s Hogmanay on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council. Al Thomson said “We are already experiencing a huge interest from around the world for tickets to the Street Party. Last year we welcomed visitors from over 80 countries to join the capital’s 3-day celebrations and we can’t wait for Edinburgh to once again show the world how to party at the ‘Home of Hogmanay’.”

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay will be the first of Edinburgh’s Festivals to celebrate 70 years since the birth of the world’s leading festival city in 1947, celebrating Edinburgh’s status as a platform for the very best of Scottish and international culture. The 25th anniversary of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay will close this celebratory year and herald 2018.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Edinburgh's Festivals and Events Champion, said: "No other show on earth compares with Edinburgh's Hogmanay and there really is no better way to bring in the bells. Our city’s next New Year's Eve experience promises to be a truly international celebration set against one of the most stunning backdrops imaginable. Early booking is a must."

Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events at VisitScotland, said “Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is an occasion known the world-over and one that plays a valuable role in promoting Scotland as the perfect stage for events and our capital as the world’s leading festival city. In the 70th year of Edinburgh’s Festivals and welcoming in Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, the famous Street Party is set to be an unmissable event and will see revellers from more than 80 countries come together to enjoy performances by some of our leading artists and welcome in 2017 in true Scottish style.”
