Public homecoming for Edinburgh Team Scotland athletes

Around 30 local Team Scotland athletes will meet and greet fans and take part in Edinburgh’s private annual sports awards.

  • Medal winning names include Team Scotland flag bearer Euan Burton, fellow Judo star Sarah Clark, and boxer Josh Taylor.

Commonwealth Games fans will have the chance to meet Edinburgh’s Team Scotland athletes at a celebration taking place in the capital tomorrow evening (Friday 29 August, 6:00-6:30pm).

Glasgow 2014 athletics competitor Chris O’Hare, Judo’s Sarah Adlington (gold), Chris Sherrington (gold) and Matthew Purssey (silver), and cycling star Louise Haston (silver) are the latest names revealed to attend the public homecoming outside the City Chambers on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Around 30 athletes (29 confirmed) with 10 medals between them are due to take part in the event, which will be followed by a private civic reception in the City Chambers with the Lord Provost and the annual Edinburgh Sports Awards. They will be presented with a gift at the private awards ceremony by the Lord Provost on behalf of the people of Edinburgh.

Scottish comedian and commentator Alan Anderson will interview the athletes, and fans are being encouraged to share their photos of the event on social media using #TeamEdinburgh. Questions and messages of support for athletes can also be submitted to the @Edinburgh_CC Twitter account for Alan to read out on the night.

Commenting, the Lord Provost said: “The response we have had from our Edinburgh athletes has been overwhelmingly positive. This event is an opportunity for local people to show support for their local athletes, and it is a chance to say thank you for making this year’s Commonwealth Games such a success for Team Scotland.”

Councillor Richard Lewis, Culture and Sport Convener, added: “The athletes will attend Edinburgh’s annual Sports Awards which are held to recognise the commitment and achievements of local clubs, staff, volunteers and coaches who support ‘grassroots’ sport in the city.”

“In what has been an exceptional year for sport in Edinburgh, more people and clubs have been nominated for the annual Edinburgh Sports Awards than ever before.”
