All set for new Boroughmuir High School

A new Boroughmuir High School moved a step closer today (Thursday, 28 August 2014) after a preferred contractor was appointed to build the new school.

The City of Edinburgh Council approved the awarding of the contract to O’Hare & McGovern at a meeting of the Finance & Resources Committee this morning.

Work on the project is expected to start in October with completion due by summer 2016. The school will be built in Fountainbridge on a site 500m away from the current Viewforth building.

Councillor Paul Godzik, Education Convener, said: “Pupils, parents and teachers have been waiting a long time for a new school and approving the appointment of a preferred contractor today is the remaining key step to starting to build it.

“Boroughmuir has a first-class academic track record, and the focus is now firmly on delivering a new school that provides an equally impressive learning environment."

The design for the canal-side site includes:

  • teaching areas arranged around a multi-functional ‘heart’, or atrium,
  • traditional classrooms offering easy access to collaborative break out areas,
  • enhanced facilities for physical activity and external learning, including a unique roof-top multi-use external games area,
  • a new public park, along the canal’s north bank, next to the new school building which will create a vibrant public space next to the waterway and towpath.

There will now be a 10 day standstill period before the contract is officially awarded.
