The Meadows

The Meadows remain one of the most important open spaces in Edinburgh and one of the most popular. The park and it's pathways are lined with wonderful mature trees and in the spring the cherry tree avenues provide glorious colour. Spring also sees a flourish of colour when thousands of crocus come into bloom along the main carriageway.

When Melville Drive was opened in 1859, as part of the South Side development, it brought a wave of popularity and, at weekends in particular, a steady progression of carriages brought the great and the good of the city to walk or play or picnic.

Over the centuries, The Meadows have provided Edinburgh’s sports men and women with a full range of activities, and when the great International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art was held in the West Meadows during the summer of 1886, Edinburgh and its Meadows site were given worldwide recognition.

Situated just behind what was Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and close to Edinburgh University, the Meadows remain as popular as ever and continue to be a major attraction for holding all kinds of events, from circuses to tented theatre. There is also a range of sporting facilities including cricket squares, a croquet green and tennis courts plus the essential play areas for children.

The Friends of the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links work in partnership with the Council to manage and maintain the park. Recent developments include tree planting, the creation of a wildlife flower meadow, new railings, tree survey and a cafe in the cricket pavillon, run by a member of the Friends group. The Friends group are also part of the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links Short Life Working Group, which addresses specific issues. The group is currently looking at the impact of events on the conditions of the Meadows and to review park management arrangements.

In 2007 a brand new play area, the Magnet play area, was opened. The unique play area was designed by our Technical Section, following consultation with local Friends group, and over 100 local children. There is a huge range of novel play equipment, including a climbing cliff and Edinburgh's first water zone, with pump, water screws and water wheel.
