Discover Your Local Wildlife AreasThe aim of the Countryside Ranger Service is to increase local awareness of countryside areas within your local area. The Countryside Rangers operate throughout the city, responding to local needs and requests. Many of these areas have been recognised as important places for wildlife by both local and national designations. The Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill and Corstorphine Hill were both designated Local Nature Reserves in 1993 because of their geological importance and significance as wildlife habitats. In addition, nine Sites of Special Scientific Interest and a further 31 Urban Wildlife Sites are found within the city. Edinburgh’s coastline is part of the Firth of Forth Special Protection Area.
