Schools

The City of Edinburgh Council Countryside Ranger Service provides a full environmental education programme.

This includes a wide range of environmental education walks, talks to classes, in-service for teachers and practical help and support for nursery, primary, special and secondary schools in Edinburgh.

5-14 curriculum guidelines

The Ranger Service have tried to make sure their education programmes are relevant to the 5-14 guidelines in Environmental Studies, linking what children may be finding out in the classroom with their exploration of the woods or river.

Further details are found in the teachers notes.

In addition the Countryside Ranger Service is here to help both children and teachers to find out what they can do to look after the countryside.

Through practical examples we explain the importance of the Country Code.

All visits, programmes and activities booked with the Countryside Ranger Service are free.

Locations

Woodland visits predominately take place in the Hermitage of Braid and Cammo Estate, although Corstorphine, Colinton Dell, Ravelston Woods, Craigmillar Castle Park, Burdiehouse Burn Valley Park and Craiglockhart Hills are also good sites.

River studies are only undertaken in the Braid Burn in the Hermitage of Braid.

Due to tide times, seashore visits must be planned well in advance. We use the areas at Cramond for sandy shore exploration and Portobello/Joppa for investigating the rocky shore.

In all cases we encourage you to make use of a site near to you. This will not only save time and resources but highlight to the children the value of their local wildlife.
