The Edinburgh Waterfront Promenade

The Edinburgh Waterfront Promenade will form a continuous 16.8km high quality walk and cycleway from Cramond in the west of the city to Joppa in the east forming part of the emerging Scottish Coastal Path and the North Sea Trail.

The first 1km phase at Gypsy Brae, Silverknowes has now been complete, extending the current Cramond/Silverknowes walkway to Granton. The next phase to Granton Harbour is due to start in 2010.

Why visit the Promenade?

The Promenade will be much more than simply a footpath and cycleway. Residents and visitors alike will be able to use the promenade to see unique parts of Edinburgh, whilst taking in breathtaking views of the Firth of Forth. Why not try rollerblading, skateboarding , bird watching or even flying a kite?

Along the route you can visit historic Cramond and gain access to Cramond Island across the causeway. The promenade also takes you past Newhaven including the village and harbour. Further attractions include passing by Ocean Terminal with its shops and restaurants and showcasing the redevelopment areas of Granton and Leith.

The east end of the route boasts the seaside resort of Portobello, where you can enjoy a walk along the traditional seaside promenade.

Ultimately, 20 destination points along the route are being created for recreation and entertainment facilities, or for just simply sitting and enjoying the view. At all times, the natural character of the coastline will be respected.
