Queensferry Museum

Situated in the historic former Royal Burgh of Queensferry,
the museum commands magnificent views of the great bridges
spanning the Forth.

It traces the history of the people of Queensferry and Dalmeny,
the historic ferry passage to Fife, the construction of the rail and
road bridges, and spotlights the wildlife of the Forth estuary.

Queensferry Museum View

One of the most striking displays, and a symbol of Queensferry’s
distinct identity, is the ancient custom of the ‘Burry Man’.

Clad from head to foot in a costume made from the burrs of the
burdock plant he parades through the former burgh for nine
hours on a Friday in early August.

The origins and meanings of the ceremony are lost in the mists
of time.

Was it intended to bring fortune to the burgh or as a device to
drive out evil spirits?

See the full size model in the museum and ponder.
