Stone of Remembrance – Edinburgh War Memorial

A simple oblong granite stone block, stepped up and inscribed:

"THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE".

This simple war memorial under the arches at the old Chambers of Commerce, now the City Chambers, was built by public subscription to commemorate the people of Edinburgh who lost their lives in the First World War. The simple granite block was designed on similar lines to memorials done by Sir Edward Lutyens for several British War Cemeteries.

The memorial was unveiled by Prince Henry on Armistice Day 1927 when he bequeathed it to the City of Edinburgh for all time coming.

Several sites had been considered - between the Scott Monument and the Mound, opposite the west door of St Giles Cathedral - whereby the Buccleuch monument would have been moved, or outside the Usher Hall.
