Free. Priceless. Your library card is a passport to a wonderful world of:

  • Reading: choose from hundreds of thousands of books
  • Film and music: cds and dvds for hire to suit every age and taste
  • Information: work, study or research online

To get your card just come along to any of our libraries, give us a few details: name, title, date of birth, address, phone number - and that's it!

You can also join online by opening the membership application form (pdf, 362kb), saving it to your computer, completing the required fields and e-mailing it to eclis@edinburgh.gov.uk. We'll process your membership and send you your new card by post.

(If you would like to borrow talking books, cds or dvds you will need to provide one form of proof of your name and address, for example a recent utility bill).

Please note for data protection reasons your membership will expire after 18 months, but can be renewed by confirming your details to a member of staff

Children and Young People

If you are under 16  a welcome letter will be sent out to your parent or carer describing the library service and asking the carer to confirm your date of birth. We need to know this should you wish to borrow a video or DVD as some of these are age restricted. The letter will also give your carer and option to contact the library should they have any concerns about you using the library.

What can I borrow?

Up to 12 items from any of the city’s libraries. The normal loan period is 3 weeks but you can renew items (in person, by phone, or online) provided that no other user has reserved them.
You can return books to any library, it doesn't have to be the one you borrowed them from.
