Special Collections

The Special Collections of Edinburgh City Libraries and Information Services are rich in material that represents Scotland’s cultural and historical heritage.

Special Collections material is held in the Edinburgh Room, Fine Art, Music, Reference and Scottish Departments of the Central Library building.

The Collections contain many rare or unique books, photographs, illustrations and manuscripts.  They cover a wide range of subjects including the history and development of Edinburgh and Scotland.  Scotland’s literary, musical and artistic heritage and connections are also well represented in the material.

For over a century Edinburgh Central Library has been developing collections of national importance through purchase, gift and bequest.  The Library continues to make additions to these collections to preserve important material for the future.
