Exploring Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Room in Central Library holds the most comprehensive collection of published material on Edinburgh past and present.

The department opened in 1932 and was the first local studies department in the country; it remains a unique resource chronicling the history, life and culture of Edinburgh.

Its collection includes over 100,000 books, maps, prints, photographs, slides, old parish registers, census returns and newspaper cuttings relating to the history, topography and social life of the City of Edinburgh.
