How many CDs and DVDs do you have?

The citywide collection contains over 50,000 CDs and over 1,000 DVDs for loan

What kind of things can I watch and listen to?

CDs - Huge range of music including jazz, world music, rock and classical. Try some of our box sets! There are also sound effects, copyright free music, sound samples and famous speeches.

DVDs - mainly classic films and world cinema. Specialist music titles are held at Sighthill and the Music Library, and art titles can be borrowed from or viewed at the Fine Art Library.

How many items can I borrow?

You can borrow up to 12 items altogether.

How much does it cost?

You can borrow up to 12 CDs for 3 weeks, DVDs for one week.
Adult library members pay 60p per item for CDs, £1.20 for DVDs
Concessionary members and under 16s pay 30p per CD, 60p per DVD.
If the CD or DVD you want is available from any at another City of Edinburgh library we can get it for you for a small charge or you can reserve it yourself online.

DVDs are available from Blackhall, Central Lending, Newington, Sighthill, Stockbridge, Fine Artand the Music Library.

Are there any tips on the care of CDs?

While you have CDs on loan please treat them carefully:

  • Handle them by the edges
  • Use a CD cleaning cloth
  • Keep them away from strong sunlight or electromagnetic fields
  • Some of the inserts and booklets are quite fragile, please treat with care
  • Report any damage to staff on return

How does the law affect the loan of CDs?

Due to music industry restrictions, most new titles are not available to libraries until 3 months after the release date.

You should be aware that it is an offence to make a copy of any recording even for private use without the written permission of the publisher.
