Young Edinburgh Performers Aspire To Have Their Names In Lights - 27 July 2008

School pupils from Edinburgh are to train to become the future budding stars of musical theatre as the city prepares the stage for this year’s Edinburgh International Festival.

‘In the Spotlight’ run by the City of Edinburgh Council, will take place over the next fortnight (28 July to 8 August) for 20 young people from schools across the city. The pupils from S1 to S6, who had to audition for a place on the course, are already showing great potential for the world of musical theatre.

The artistic and creative skills of these talented young people will be nurtured, while the tutors will also build on the technical understanding they need to develop their individual skills in singing, drama and dance.

Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, Convener for Education, Children and Families, said: “I have been vigorously pursuing the idea of excellence in the world of drama and music. My vision is to enable young performers to train with top professionals who will tutor them to the highest standard in singing, dancing and drama. I am looking forward to the last day of the course when their work will culminate in a performance of excerpts from well known musicals in front of family and friends.

“I believe there is a real dearth of young professionals in musical theatre in Scotland – hopefully we can aim to fill this niche. We are extremely grateful to Stewart’s Melville College, who have allowed us the use of their beautiful performing arts centre free, for this course - another example of the co-operative links being forged with the private sector."
