Minister Congratulates Edinburgh Pupil on Project to Help Win Elections - 08 April 2008

Minister for Schools and Skills, Maureen Watt, MSP, will visit an Edinburgh school tomorrow (Wednesday, 9 April 2008) to congratulate a pupil who has won a national competition with a project to help politicians win elections.

Fourth year pupil, Danielle Johnston (15), from Wester Hailes Education Centre won the competition, organized by the Modern Studies Educational Trust, with a PowerPoint presentation.

The judges were impressed by the time and thought she had invested in the presentation, the relevance and accuracy of the information presented and the extent to which she made use of local examples.

The Minister will present Danielle with a certificate and cheque as her prize.

Danielle said “I enjoyed working on my presentation and finding out more about election campaigns. I was delighted to win this prize and look forward to spending the money. “

Ms Watt, Minister for Schools and Skills, said: “I am very pleased to present Danielle with her prize which she so rightly deserves after showing such skill and dedication in her presentation. Her attention to detail and her enthusiasm for her subject are self-evident and her success only goes to prove that when a pupil is inspired in class, it can pay dividends.”

Councillor David Beckett, Vice Convener for Education, Children and Families, said: “It is great to see young people encouraged to research the election system and it is great to know that our schools are producing such talented pupils – well done Danielle.”
