Craigmillar Urban Design Framework

The Craigmillar Urban Design Framework, (CUDF), jointly funded by the Council and the Craigmillar Joint Venture Company (“Parc”), sets out a vision and planning principles for development of the Craigmillar area. It covers both the area for regeneration and new development. The Framework will be flexible to allow for changes and choices in the future.

The Framework was approved at Planning Committee on 29th September 2005 and forms supplementary planning guidance for Craigmillar. Consultation took place on a draft Framework between January 2005 and April 2005 and a summary of consultation responses was presented to the Planning Committee on 16th June 2005. The Framework was revised in the light of comments received.

The key elements of the Framework are:

  • Design approach based on traditional streets
  • Major areas of new housing with a mixture of flats and houses and a range of size of units
  • A new public open space structure within the built up area
  • Strengthening of Town Centre and its centre of gravity moved eastwards to be more central to Craigmillar as a whole
  • New Community Schools – new Community High School located in the Town Centre and three new (and place for a fourth if needed) primary schools
  • Community Facilities to be provided within or in relation to new schools
  • Land allocated for Economic Development
  • Design principles to improve Niddrie Mains Road
  • A new design of local streets based on Home Zone principles
  • Major new parkland areas wrapping around the edge of the built up area
  • The proposed realignment and restoration of the Niddrie Burn.
