Public realmEdinburgh’s capital streets project aims to breathe new life into the city centre and make the most of previously underused public space. By using the highest quality materials, the project will accentuate the city’s historical features while rejuvenating the urban landscape. The theme in all of the capital streets projects is giving greater priority to pedestrians while maintaining essential access for motorists. The improved city centre spaces will provide more opportunities for outdoor events, a move that’s proved successful in other major cities for delivering economic benefits to shops and local businesses. The capital streets project is driven in partnership between the City of Edinburgh Council and Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian (SEEL). Edinburgh City Centre Management (ECCM), Edinburgh World Heritage Trust and Historic Scotland are also involved to ensure the sympathetic development and maintenance of Edinburgh’s public spaces.
