Local Plans

The Council has a statutory duty to prepare local plans to guide land-use within its boundary.  A local plan sets out detailed policies and specific proposals for the development and use of land that should guide day-to-day planning decisions (Scottish Executive, SPP1 - The Planning System, 2002).

There are currently six adopted local plans covering the city:

The Local Plans are regularly updated and the Council has prepared the Edinburgh City Local Plan which will replace all the existing urban area plans (Central, South East, North East, South West, and North West).

You can view the local plans in most Council libraries. You can also buy copies of the Local Plans (the cost is £10, except for the RWELP & ECLP which cost £15). Please phone 0131 529 3900 to check the cost of the plan you want to buy.

Please write to us giving the details of the Plan you want to buy and include a cheque (made payable to The City of Edinburgh Council) at:
