Gaelic Language Plan

Fàilte gu Dùn Èideann

Welcome to Edinburgh

Gaelic is considered a national asset and Edinburgh, as Scotland’s capital city, has a unique opportunity to promote and develop the language.

What are your views?

The City of Edinburgh Council has prepared its Gaelic Language Plan which was open for public consultation.

In preparing this plan, the Council is demonstrating its commitment to the aspirations and objectives included in the National Plan for Gaelic and the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005.

Edinburgh is home to the second largest urban population familiar with Gaelic and, as such, is a good sounding board for public opinion.

July 2010 update
As a public
organisation, the Council is required to produce a Gaelic Language Plan. In preparing this Plan, the Council is demonstrating its commitment to the aspirations and objectives included in the National Plan for Gaelic and the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005.
The City of Edinburgh Council submitted its Draft Gaelic Language Plan 2010-15 to Bòrd na Gàidhlig (BnaG) on 11 June 2010. This is not the Council’s final Plan; it requires Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s consideration and approval before gaining that status. This could take up to six months.
