Edinburgh Index 2008What is the Edinburgh Index?The Edinburgh Index has been developed by the City of Edinburgh Council to examine levels of relative deprivation across the city. The index allocates a score of 0 to100 (with 100 being the most deprived) to around 3,900 Census Output Areas (OAs) in the city based on a variety of themes that contribute to overall deprivation. The approach broadly follows the methodology used by the Scottish Government in the 2006 Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). Why did we create an Edinburgh Index?The index has helped to inform the distribution of Fairer Scotland Funding across the city. It is envisaged that the Index may also be used to help inform future local policy-making and resource distribution. Which themes are included in the Index?The five themes used in the Index are:
