Mortonhall chapelMortonhall Crematorium is situated on the south side of Edinburgh in a mature woodland setting. The crematorium has a modern design created by the architect Sir Basil Spence and opened in February 1967.




Facilities at Mortonhall crematorium include:

  • Mortonhall chapel (seating for 250)
  • Pentland chapel (seating for 50)
  • Religious symbols representing Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, San, Sikhism and Tao. All symbols can be covered for non-religious services.
  • An organ and CD playing equipment in both chapels
  • Disabled Parking and removable pew for wheelchairs in both chapels
  • Deaf-aid loop system in both chapels
  • Waiting room with washrooms
  • Disabled toilet (situated within cemetery washroom)

What happens to ashes at Mortonhall?

If the next of kin have requested that the ashes be dispersed at Mortonhall, they will be buried in our Garden of Remembrance. This is a grassed, sloped area marked by a large white cross. No form of memorial is allowed in the Garden of Remembrance and grave plots cannot be identified.

At Mortonhall there are three forms of memorial available. You can find a brief description of each below, with full details available directly from Mortonhall Crematorium.

Book of Remembrance

Book of Remembrance

Entries into our Book of Remembrance are two, five or eight lines long and are the only form of permanent memorial available at Mortonhall. The books are displayed in our Chapel of Remembrance, with a view to our Garden of Remembrance. Miniature books and memorial cards are also available.

Memorial Walkway plaques

Memorial Walkway Plaques

Plaques can be inscribed with wording of your choice and have a vase for fresh cut flowers. Plaques are located next to our Garden of Remembrance and are offered on a ten or twenty year lease basis, with an option to renew the lease.

 

Columbarium

Also located next to our Garden of Remembrance, the Columbarium is our newest memorial at Mortonhall and contains niches where cremated remains urns and caskets can be placed. An inscribed plate then covers the front of the niche. These niches are leased on a ten or twenty year basis, with the option for renewal.
