Connect Library Learning and Internet Centres - FAQsWhat is Connect? What is Connect?Connect is a library service which offers free public access to the internet, web-based e-mail and MS Office applications. All users must agree to the Terms and Conditions of Use. Connect is free to use, although there will be charges for printing. Do I have to be a library member to use the Connect Service? No. Non-members may also use the Connect service. You will need to read and sign the 'Conditions of Use' form and show ID with your signature on it – please ask staff for further details. If you are staying in Edinburgh for longer than 3 months we would recommend that you join the library. Where can I access the internet? In your local community library and some departments in Central Library. Internet access is also available at the Resource Centre in Central Library which has facilities for disabled users. Can I book in advance?Yes, one hour sessions can be booked at all community libraries and in most departments in Central Library. Please bring your library card with you when booking and before each internet session. You may also book a slot over the telephone. If you are more than ten minutes late, you may lose your booking if any other users are waiting. You can also just turn up and wait for the next available computer. Can you teach me about computers?Staff can give a brief introduction to the internet, but not in-depth training. You will be expected to use the service primarily on a self-help basis. Help is available in the Guide for Users, and useful help sites are book marked on the internet PCs. Some libraries organise weekly or monthly computer classes, see the computer classes page for further details. If you can't get to a class we recommend the BBC Computer Tutor and Webwise sites as good places to get familiar with the basics. Can I use the computers if I am under 16?A parent or guardian must authorise your use of the internet. If you need to join the library, your parent or guardian will need to complete part of your membership form. If you are a library member but have not used the internet, please ask a member of staff. Your parent or guardian may need to fill out a consent form to allow you to use the service. You can read the information technology policy for children and young people (Word, 24.5kb) or look through the internet service for children and young people FAQs (Word, 22kb) Can I print from the computer?Yes, but there is a charge for this service. Please see the current charges list. Can I save my documents?Yes you can save to the desktop, but only until you log off. You can save to a memory stick (available to buy in libraries). Contacts
