Reference and Research HelpDo I need a library card to use the Edinburgh Room?No. The Edinburgh Room is a reference department, and everyone is welcome to consult our collection. We may ask you to fill in a consultation slip to see items in closed access, for rarer items you will need to produce identification and may need to make an appointment.

Can I borrow books on Edinburgh?If you want to borrow books on Edinburgh, please visit the Scottish Department which has an Edinburgh lending section.
What family history resources do you have?We have many resources to help with family history research: census returns, Old parish registers, Post Office Directories, monumental inscriptions etc.
Does the Edinburgh Room answer reference enquiries?You can contact us by telephone, email, letter or in person. We will gladly answer enquiries about our resources and services, but regret that we cannot undertake extensive research on your behalf. Please see the Edinburgh Room enquiry page for more details.
Can the Edinburgh Room staff research my family history for me?We can answer queries and give advice, but we cannot undertake extensive family history research on your behalf.
ServicesAre there public access computers in the Edinburgh Room?Yes. The Edinburgh Room has two public access computers which you can book up to one day in advance. Read more about the Connect Service here.
Can I make photocopies in the Edinburgh Room?Yes. We have a black and white copier, which costs 15p for an A4 size and 30p for A3.
Can I use my laptop?Yes, you can use your laptop in the Edinburgh Room. Please ask staff if you need access to a power socket.
Is there a wifi service in the library?Yes there is. If you do not have a username and password ask a member of staff for help.
Can I use my digital camera to photograph items?No. We ask that you do not use personal cameras to photograph material from our collection. If you would like copies of an item, please speak to a member of staff.
Can I bring a group to the Edinburgh Room?The Edinburgh Room does cater for group visits. Please read the Visits & Talks section for more information.
Does the Edinburgh Room display posters and leaflets?We have limited space but will try to display as many posters and leaflets for Edinburgh events as possible. Please hand posters and leaflets in at the enquiry desk.
Can I buy copies of prints and photographs from the Edinburgh Room collection?Yes. We can provide copies of our images in a variety of formats. Please ask a member of staff for more details and prices. A large selection of our image collection is now available to view online at www.capitalcollections.org.uk
