Special Schools and Classes

The City of Edinburgh Children and Families Department has a responsibility to make adequate and efficient provision for learners with additional support needs for whose education they are responsible. The Council can give support to families with children with additional support needs by:

  • Giving information on available services in Edinburgh.
  • Special help for all learners with additional support needs, with ongoing review of how suitable and effective that help is.

The following services will require an assessment, which can be requested through the Headteacher of a child's Nursery, Primary or Secondary School:

  • Placement in special classes in nurseries attached to Primary Schools.
  • Placement in Language and Communication classes in Primary Schools.
  • Placement in Secondary Resource (Additional Support Needs - Learning and Language).
  • Placement in nurseries for pre school children with significant sensory, physical and learning needs.
  • Placement in a Special School.
